We went to India to buy stock for our events business, Hampshire Party Pods. We hire out specialist Indian marquees, so this was a work trip. Jaipur was our first stop.
Three days in, we accidentally stumbled into a fabric shop. Inside were the most gorgeous hand block printed fabrics, along with bags and washbags that we couldn’t leave behind.
Naturally, we bought some and took them back to our hotel.
By the following morning, things had escalated.
Zee woke me up to say a block print manufacturer had spotted us documenting our trip on social media and got in touch. He’d invited us to visit his factory.
Us being us, we called a taxi and set off on an hour-long journey to meet someone we’d only just heard from. Apparently, that was the day’s plan now.
We arrived at a family-run factory full of bright colours and beautiful fabrics blowing in the wind. We met the people behind the printing and even had a go at hand block printing ourselves.
We had the best day.
Somehow, we left with samples of beautiful bags and a price list.
That evening, back at the hotel, we started talking. We’d seen the fabrics, met the makers and come away with bags we loved. Could we actually turn this into something?
By the end of the night, we’d decided to start Pink City.
We’d come to India to buy marquees. We were going home with another business.
